Bec Johnson: General Manager

Bec is originally from Melbourne Australia, she has been an avid skier for 30 years and has worked in the ski industry for 17 of those.

Before moving to Banff, Canada in 2003 she spent eight seasons ski instructing at Mt Buller, and Niseko Japan as well as some time teaching at Whistler and Norquay. In 1995 whilst working as a ski technician she developed a passion for custom boot fitting. This past year Bec embarked on her coaching qualifications through the CSCF.

“I learned my boot fitting skills initially from watching and listening to other boot fitters, attending courses in Australia, Whistler and the US, reading ski texts and developing my understanding of ski mechanics from undertaking ski instructor levels. My previous studies in kinesiology contributed to my understanding of skiing biomechanics and my strong science background helped bring all of these components together.

For the last seven years I have been developing and fine-tuning my skills by discussion with and feedback from elite level coaches, level 4 ski instructors and the athletes themselves. I greatly enjoy discussions with elite ski instructors such as Warren Jobbitt, Program Director for the CSIA as well as highly regarded race coaches with successful teams and athletes that I have the pleasure of working with. I believe this open communication between coach, athlete, sports health professional and boot fitter is the cornerstone to good boot theory and boot work.

Skiing, ski theory and ski equipment technology is an ever evolving science. I feel it is vital to keep my boot practice at the leading edge of current ski technique to ensure that I can provide a level of service that is unsurpassed in Canada. In fact this was a key motivator in my undertaking CSCF levels to ensure that I thoroughly understand what is being taught on the hill at the moment.”

Bec’s boxer dog Mac (short for Macchiato) is the store mascot and quite a local character in Banff.  Mac loves the mountains and delights in sliding down snowy slopes. He loves meeting new people and will give you a warm welcome when you come to the Banff Ski Lounge.
